Triathlon distances: Sprint, Standard, Middle and Long
Triathlon is a continuous swim, bike and run race. The most common formats are Super Sprint, Sprint, Standard or Olympic, Middle and Long. Actual course lengths can vary, so the official event announcement always takes priority.
Sprint triathlon
The common Sprint format is a 750 m swim, 20 km bike and 5 km run. On Bib2Bib, Sprint is one complete triathlon filter—not merely a “5K run” filter.
Standard or Olympic
The common Standard distance is 1.5/40/10 km. Standard and Olympic can lead to the same discovery category while the organiser’s wording and the measured legs remain visible.
- Format and measured legs are stored separately.
- Road and cross/off-road remain distinct.
- Individual and relay are different entry types.
Middle and IRONMAN 70.3
IRONMAN 70.3 is a specific branded 1.9/90/21.1 km format. It may be discovered within a broader Middle family, but its brand and exact legs must remain explicit.
Long distance and full IRONMAN
Long-distance events do not all use one universal course length. A full IRONMAN is a 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike and 42.2 km run. A generic “Long distance” label must not be presented as an official IRONMAN event.
Aquathlon and duathlon
These are related multisport formats, not triathlon. Aquathlon combines swimming and running; duathlon combines running and cycling. Each needs a separate sport option and its own legs.
What a useful listing should show
